pino pascali award

The Pino Pascali Prize was established in Polignano a Mare in 1969 by the artist’s parents, Franco and Lucia Pascali, to honor the memory of their son who tragically died in a motorcycle accident in 1968, when he was only 33 years old.

The president of the Award, Palma Bucarelli and, subsequently, Bruno Mantura and Italo Faldi, superintendents of the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, appointed the members of the jury, among whom was Giulio Carlo Argan. The organizational secretariat of the Award was managed by Filippo Franco Favale (President of the Pro Loco of Polignano) and a great friend of the Pascali family. The Prize consisted of a sum of 200,000 lire, allocated by Pascali’s parents, a plaque and the staging of a personal exhibition of the works of the Prize-winning artist. In 1969, the 1st edition, the Prize was awarded to Maurizio Mochetti, who held his solo show in the deconsecrated church of Santo Stefano in Polignano. In 1970, the 2nd edition of the Prize was awarded to Vettor Pisani who held his exhibition in the Castello Svevo in Bari. The 3rd edition of the Prize, in 1972, was awarded to Vincenzo Agnetti, whose exhibition was held in the Provincial Art Gallery of Bari which also hosted the 4th edition, in 1976, won by Luca Patella and the 5th edition, in 1978, won by Jannis Kounellis.
